I like and really agree with your second quote. No matter how exellent teaching method we use, a simple encouragement to the right child at the right moment can surprisingly replace it. When I read Chicken Soup for the Teachers, my tear dropped just because of one story there about a school helper who regularly greeted and praised a student who was neglected by his school friends. This story was written by the student when he became an adult. He gained his spirit from an ordinary guy through encouragements rather than an excellent, interesting teaching from a teacher.
I'm enjoying everyone's blog quotes. Your first quote brings to mind a few students and their parents that I have had the pleasure of seeing years after they were my students. It's interesting to learn and here about the things they remember about my class. Their memories are definitely not the same as mine. For the most part the memories they have are about how they felt not what they learned. It is important for us to remember that our footprints leave an imprint for a life time.
